The time course of visuo-motor aVordances

چکیده
To measure dynamic visuo-motor coupling within the two hemispheres, we showed observers an animation of a rotating cup. They indicated with left or right buttons when a Wxation dot in the center of the animation changed color. For either hand, response times changed continuously with the irrelevant position of the cup’s handle, even when the perceptual asymmetry of the handle was controlled. This spontaneous lateralized motor preparation showed both topdown and bottom-up components and was more pronounced for the right than the left hand. The dynamic aVordance method will help understand perception– action coupling in the brain.

Event-related TMS over the right posterior parietal cortex induces ipsilateral visuo-spatial interference.
The right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is implicated in visuo-spatial processing, as illustrated by patients with visuo-spatial neglect, but the precise time-course of its contribution is still an open question. In the present study we assessed whether single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can interfere with the performance of normal subjects in a standard visuo-spatial task. ...
متن کاملWhen Action Observation Facilitates Visual Perception: Activation in Visuo-Motor Areas Contributes to Object Recognition.
Recent evidence suggests an interaction between the ventral visual-perceptual and dorsal visuo-motor brain systems during the course of object recognition. However, the precise function of the dorsal stream for perception remains to be determined. The present study specified the functional contribution of the visuo-motor system to visual object recognition using functional magnetic resonance im...
متن کاملfMRI investigation of cortical and subcortical networks in the learning of abstract and effector-specific representations of motor sequences.
A visuo-motor sequence can be learned as a series of visuo-spatial cues or as a sequence of effector movements. Earlier imaging studies have revealed that a network of brain areas is activated in the course of motor sequence learning. However, these studies do not address the question of the type of representation being established at various stages of visuo-motor sequence learning. In an earli...
متن کاملVisuo-motor development which causes detection of visual depth from motion and density cues1
This study examines the effectiveness of cues of visual depth and distance in the course of development and how this process depends on visuo-motor development. In the visual pitfall situation, i.e. a modification of Gibson’s visual cliff, eight Japanese monkeys (macaca fuscata) were observed with respect to their depth avoidance and visuo-motor activity. The tests were run once a week from the...
متن کاملPresupplementary motor area activation during sequence learning reflects visuo-motor association.
In preceding studies (Hikosaka et al., 1996; Sakai et al., 1998) we have shown that the presupplementary motor area (pre-SMA), an anterior part of the medial premotor cortex, is active during visuo-motor sequence learning. However, the paradigm required the subjects first to acquire correct visuo-motor association and then to acquire correct sequence, and it was still unknown which of the two p...
